WayPoint and Timberland Charter Academy Schools

Muskegon Township Charter Schools, are basically public schools run by outside entities. Like regular public schools, no tuition is charged to parents and every child that applies must be accepted (unless classrooms are full, in which case a lottery is held). Charter schools are overseen by state-approved sponsors like state universities, community colleges and local school boards. Charter schools are always under the direct supervision of the school board and operating sponsor. Charter schools also receive per-student funds and must adhere to all state and federal education, safety and health statutes.

WayPoint Academy in Muskegon Township is beginning this year with a new name, formally Muskegon Technical Academy, WayPoint's name change comes with a great history.

TIMBERLAND CHARTER ACADEMY,
Home of the Timber wolves serves a diverse population of over 550 students.

Timberland's Mission: To provide each child with a safe, supportive learning environment. To foster the personal, social, and academic growth of every child. To develop respect and responsibility for oneself and others. Thus enabling each child to become a lifelong learner, responsible adult and productive citizen. Over 90% of students in grades 2nd through 8th attained their growth targets in the winter and spring assessments on the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) test. This test helps us monitor the areas where our students need improvement. Because of these gains, our students outperformed 99% of the national growth norm for the NWEA.
Mission Through the continuous collaboration of the staff and community, Timberland Charter Academy strives: To provide each child with a safe, supportive learning environment. To foster the personal, social, and academic growth of every child. To develop respect and responsibility for oneself and others. Thus enabling each child to become a lifelong learner, responsible adult and productive citizen. Educational Philosophy Every teacher should respect individual learning styles –willing to go the extra mile to reach each student. Curriculum should be flexible to incorporate these different learning styles by differentiating instruction. Abilities, interests and cultural aspects must also be addressed in an appropriate yet nurturing way. Hands-on, concrete experience is the most natural form of learning. Students should be aware of acceptable behavior and consequences when the rules are not followed. A school is NO substitute to a strong stable home; it is however, a place to foster accountability, responsibility, respect and care. The best approach to ensure our students reach their greatest potential is a collaborative one that continually addresses the needs of the children, their families, the school and the community.

Sportsmen for Youth - 'Youth Day 2008'

THIS EVENT IS PRESENTED FREE FOR YOUTH BY LOCAL SPORTSMEN GROUPS

Muskegon Area Sportsmen for Youth, will host the 15th Annual Sportsmen for Youth Day on Saturday, Sept. 6, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m at P. J. Hoffmaster State Park.
This event is hosted each year with the cooperation of area sportsmen and women who volunteer to introduce young people to outdoor sports. The park's large beach area parking lot will be converted into an outdoor sports show where young people are given the opportunity to try their hand at archery, shooting sports, fishing and many other outdoor activities.
There will be special live animal programs such as Birds of Prey by the Michigan United Conservation Clubs, Michigan Snakes by Nature Discovery and Michigan Turtles by the Gillette Visitor Center.
Participants under 17 years of age will receive a t-shirt and other souvenirs, a lunch coupon and raffle tickets. Raffle prizes include outdoor equipment and other items.
Overflow parking is being provided by the Muskegon Motor Cycle Hill Climb Association at their Hill Climb location on Lake Harbor Road. A shuttle service will move participants the short distance from the overflow parking area to Hoffmaster State Park.
Hoffmaster State park is located at 6585 Lake Harbor Rd., southwest of Muskegon. There is no fee for this special event, but a Michigan State Parks Motor Vehicle Permit is required to enter the park.

Muskegon Charter Township Board Meeting

August 18, 2008 Meeting Highlights

The Board accepted the resignation of Supervisor Pat Jordan effective August 31st.
Richard Nolan will run against Dave Kieft Jr. on the Nov. 4 general election ballot for the supervisor position.

Eastside Extravaganza founder Carole Nichols announced the closing of the event. The event this year raised more than $44,000. The event donated $1,300 to the police department, $1,600 to the fire department, and $35,000 to the public works department for purchase of small children's toys and play equipment for the parks. Over the many years of the Eastside Extravaganza it's proceeds have funded a skate park and hockey rink, built a pavilion, purchased picnic tables for all public parks in East Muskegon and, play equipment for children. It will be greatly missed not only by the kids but by OV graduates that used the event for an annual meeting place to renew friendships and have reunions. The board voted unanimously to have a plaque of appreciation made and presented to Carole Nichols and her husband Jerry, the co-creators of the event, but even this small gesture can't thank them enough for the years of fun and the generous donations they have made. Thank you to all who have made this event such fun.

The Police Department has promoted Detective Sanford to Sargent. We are lucky to have such dedicated and qualified officers protecting our citizens. Congratulation Sargent Sanford.

Maintenance and Inspection Department has set a minimum of $35 for a permit fee. Increased gas prices has been a major factor in this small increase.

Request for transfer of Class C Liquor License from Rossi's to Cancun Bar has been tabled for 2 weeks while the transfer and tax requirements are completed.

About Muskegon Township

Muskegon Charter Township is the oldest Township in the State of Michigan. It was created by the State Legislature in 1837 and included parts of what is now Ottawa and Oceana Counties. Over the years, as a result of decisions by the State of Michigan and annexations by the City of Muskegon the Township ended up with the complicated configuration that now exists with our political boundaries encompassing about 23 square miles.

The Township is divided by the Muskegon River basin with about one-third of the Township North of the river and two-thirds to the South.

The Township provides a full range of services including Fire, Police, Water, Sewer, Parks and Recreation, Sanitation and Highway Departments. Muskegon Township is one of the two Townships in Michigan with a DPW department.

The Township seal or insignia you may see on Township stationery, vehicles and our flag has a rich history and meaning. In 1972 the former Township Clerk, Jack Joslyn, recognized the need for an appropriate and distinguished official seal for the Township. Jack designed and had a local artist fine tune the basics for manufacture.

Jack incorporated the Michigan Seal to represent the State in which the Township is located. The six stars represent the entities which have occupied or governed the areas: The American Indian, Spain, France, Great Britain, Colonies and finally, the United States of America. The eagle and its freedom in flight is equivalent to the freedom of our citizens in this Nation.

Planning Commission 8/11/2008

Planning Commission Highlights.

At the last meeing we approved the MAISD project in Oak Point Subdivision for the construction of 7 homes over the next 7 years by students at the school. This project was presented by Brian Peters one of the construction teachers at MAISD.

Information was presented on the Michigan Planners Annual Conference and their agenda was passed out.

Muskegon Parks and Recreation Committee presented it's report.
The committee with be applying for a grant to develop the tennis court at Riverside Park into a skate park and ice arena. This is a grant/contest from Ace Hardware. The finalist will be announced in September. Thank you to Judy Clark-Ochs for her request and interest in Riverside Park.

Parks and Rec also reported that Eastside Extravaganza installed playground animals and cranes for the kids from the proceeds of their event. Thnak you to them for their donation and a FUN event.

The plans for Musketawa Trail are still in progress and Stewart Peterson is following this.

This meeting was well attended and was the first chance for some of us to meet those people elected at the primary to run for the Township leadership positions. Since most of those people have no opposition in November they have already been elected with the exception of Dave Kieft who will be on the November ballot with Planning Commissioner Dick Nolan.
Several new faces will be joining the leadership of Muskegon Township and all seem eager to work together to move our Township forward. I found long ago that no matter how much we might all want the same thing our ideas on the way to get there might differ a lot. It is important that we have discussion, varying ideas and different view points, this can open up avenues to achieve our goals that might have been over looked. It is equally important that after discussion and decisions we all unite behind the idea and put the Township first. I have served on many boards and this looks to be one with strong leadership possibilities and I look forward to many lively discussions and much hand shaking and unity after the decisions are made.

Thank You

Thank you for your support in the August 5th Primary.
I am looking forward to serving you as a Muskegon Township Trustee.
I will be looking for input from you in the areas that you see need attention in our Township, I hope to be able to keep and improve the quality of life in Muskegon Township while getting the most 'bang for the buck' with township funds.

Muskegon Township has a wide diversity and a very complementary blend of business and residential, I will work hard to maintain that and strive to increase the desirability of Muskegon Township for it's residence and businesses.

The goal of Muskegon Township as a GREAT PLACE TO LIVE, WORK AND PLAY, will be high on my list of priorities as I assume my responsibilities in November.

Please feel free to contact me as I will need your input and suggestions to work for you as Trustee.
